Outlook

The first half of 2020 has been fraught with challenges on a global scale which have significantly impacted the economic outlook. The COVID-19 pandemic brought economic activity to a halt in the first quarter, which carried through the majority of the second quarter. This slow down in activity caused unemployment rates around the world to reach unprecedented levels. Governments and global central banks have been confronting these challenges head-on with significant economic stimuli. Incredibly, stock markets around the world have managed to recover a significant portion of the losses experienced in the first quarter, even though the economic recovery is in the very early stages. Risks that remain on the horizon for 2020 are plentiful, with the two primary risks being the U.S. election and the possible second wave of COVID-19 cases. With respect to the U.S. election, President Donald Trump and the Republican party were the favourites heading into 2020. However, their mishandling of the global pandemic and lack of leadership in addressing the protests for greater equality have caused the political pendulum to swing in favour of the Democratic party. A Democratic victory could pose an economic threat based on a less fiscally supportive platform. The more significant risk to the economic and market outlook would be a potential second wave of COVID-19 cases that could pause or reverse the progress in re-opening the global economy. Overall, we remain cautiously optimistic as the economy works through the current COVID-19 recession.

Performance returns for the Matco Mutual Funds are calculated by Matco Financial Inc. These returns are calculated and reported in Canadian dollars and are historical simple returns for the 3 month, YTD and 1 year periods and annualized compounded total returns for periods after 1 year. They include changes in unit value and reinvestment of all distributions and do not take into account sales, redemption, distribution or optional charges or income taxes payable by any security holder that would have reduced returns. A cumulative return on an investment is the aggregate amount that the investment has gained or lost over time, independent of the amount of time involved, expressed as a percentage. Calendar year return reflects the compound rate of return over the specified calendar year (January 1st to December 31st). Matco Fund returns are calculated after management fees and operating expenses have been deducted.
